Massage can help IBS

imageIrritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS) is an irritation in the large intestine. It can cause food to move too quickly through the digestive tract causing diarrhea or too slowly causing constipation, cramping, bloating, and gas. There is no known cause or cure for IBS, though diet and stress play a role in aggravating the bowel.

Treatment options are laxatives, prescription medication, yoga, psychotherapy, and massage. A traditional relaxation massage can ease stress and anxiety thereby relaxing the intestine. But more specifically, abdominal massage can assist in creating movement, or peristalsis when constipated, and release all symptoms, helping the body relieve the bowel mass. With diarrhea, it is advisable to hold off on an abdominal massage until the acute discomfort subsides.
